Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato: A One-Off Celebrating a Century of Collaboration

Language Switcher

Created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Zagato, the Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato stands as a modern interpretation of the Gran Turismo ideal. First begun in 1921 with the Tipo G1, the partnership between the two Milanese icons has produced some of the most collectible cars in automotive history—and this one-off continues that legacy in emphatic style.

A Short-Wheelbase Giulia with GTAm DNA

The project is based on the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio with a manual transmission, updated by Zagato to GTAm specifications while retaining a six-speed mechanical gearbox.

Developed entirely in-house by Zagato, the car uses the Giorgio modular platform of the Giulia and Stelvio, with optimized overhangs and a shortened wheelbase—hence the “SWB” designation—true to Zagato’s sporting tradition.

The Return of the SZ Design Language

For this double anniversary, Zagato chose the “SZ” theme rather than the “TZ” language previously explored with the TZ3 models.
The Giulia SWB Zagato represents a natural evolution of the Alfa Romeo SZ lineage, from the 1961 Codatronca through to the iconic S.Z. of the 1990s.

The front end features the distinctive 3+3 headlamp signature seen on both modern Alfa Romeos and historic SZ models. At the rear, the truncated tail—an unmistakable Zagato hallmark—delivers both aerodynamic efficiency and visual drama.

Carbon Construction and Gran Turismo Philosophy

The cabin is entirely constructed from carbon fibre and incorporates Zagato’s signature double-bubble roof. This solution reduces overall height while improving aerodynamics without compromising ergonomics.
Simplicity, lightness and aerodynamic purity define the bodywork, echoing the philosophy of 1960s Gran Turismo cars reinterpreted for the modern era.

Voices from Zagato and Alfa Romeo Design

The official photo shoot took place at “La Pista” in Arese, the historic Alfa Romeo test track.
Andrea Zagato, CEO of Zagato, described the collaboration as “an absolute classic of collecting,” while Alfa Romeo Design VP Alejandro Mesonero praised the car for perfectly combining beauty and performance—core values shared by both brands.

Nori Harada, Vice President of Design at ZED Milano, highlighted how this project represents a further evolution of the traditional coachbuilder-manufacturer relationship, proving that a century-old collaboration can still look confidently toward the future.

A New Milestone in a Legendary Partnership

Over more than 100 years, Alfa Romeo and Zagato have created over 150 highly collectible models. The Giulia SWB Zagato stands as both a celebration of that extraordinary heritage and a statement of intent for the future.
As the car is officially handed over to its sole owner, it concludes an important chapter in Zagato’s history—while ensuring the legend continues, one bespoke masterpiece at a time.
