Climbing Back into the Spotlight: The Legendary 1977 Polo I Hill Climb Race Car Returns
The 1977 “Polo I Hill Climb Race Car” is a shining example of Volkswagen Polo’s sporty heritage. This widened and lowered motorsport machine competed for nearly 20 years in hill climb racing, serving as a true athlete of its time.
After a two-year-long restoration, the one-off Bali Green Polo I made a striking return in 2022 at the Osnabrück Hill Climb, part of the International Hill Climb Cup. Under the hood lies a 1,300 cc engine delivering 81 kW (110 PS) and a top speed of approximately 150 km/h.
Built for the demands of racing, the car features a shorter gear ratio and a rollover cage to meet safety standards. Blending motorsport history with modern engineering care, this revived hill climb legend once again captured the imagination of enthusiasts and racers alike.
