In 1993, Mercedes-Benz introduced the 500 GE V8, the first G-Class fitted with a V8 engine. Limited to only 446 units worldwide—with just 50 officially imported to Japan—the model has since become one of the rarest and most sought-after variants in the G-Class lineage.
The Pioneer of Luxury Off-Roaders

While the G-Class was originally known as a rugged, military-based off-roader, the 500 GE V8 redefined its image. By combining a powerful V8 engine with luxurious equipment, it pioneered the concept of a premium private off-road vehicle. This philosophy lives on today, as modern G-Class models, from the base version to AMG variants, are consistently equipped with high-performance engines.
AMG-Tuned 5.0-Liter V8 Engine

At its heart lies the AMG-assisted M117 5.0-liter SOHC V8 engine, producing 243 PS (177 kW) and 375 Nm of torque. It was capable of a top speed of 180 km/h and accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.4 seconds—remarkable figures for an off-roader of its time. To handle this performance, the 500 GE V8 was equipped with ABS and ventilated front disc brakes, along with a refined suspension setup that balanced on-road comfort and off-road ability.
Why Only 446 Units?
The limited production run was largely due to the engine. By 1993, Mercedes-Benz had already shifted to the newer 4-valve-per-cylinder M119 engine. However, the M119 was too large for the G-Class engine bay, and the older M117 was no longer suited for large-scale production. As a result, the 500 GE V8 remained a strictly limited edition.
A Refined Interior

Inside, the cabin featured black leather with medium grey trimming, accented by luxurious walnut veneer. Standard equipment included heated seats, cruise control, automatic transmission, air conditioning, a sliding sunroof, and a leather steering wheel. At a price of 178,250 Deutsche Marks—nearly double that of the six-cylinder G 320—the 500 GE V8 was positioned as an exclusive flagship.
Recognized as Automotive Heritage
In 2023, the 500 GE V8 was officially recognized in Germany as an automotive cultural asset. Vehicles that meet the required condition standards can receive the special “H” (Historisch) license plate, marking them as historic cars. More than just a limited-edition model, the 500 GE V8 stands as a milestone that transformed the G-Class into the luxury off-roader we know today.
