Two AE86 Concepts That Blend Heritage with Innovation
At the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon held from January 13 to 15 in Makuhari Messe, Toyota unveiled two groundbreaking concepts based on the iconic AE86 sports car: the hydrogen-powered AE86 H2 Concept and the fully electric AE86 BEV Concept.
Developed by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) and Lexus respectively, these two vehicles showcase Toyota’s commitment to carbon neutrality while preserving driving excitement.
AE86 H2 Concept: Preserving the Spirit of the Combustion Engine
The AE86 H2 Concept is a tribute to internal combustion fans. Based on the AE86 Trueno, it uses a hydrogen-powered engine developed with insights from TGR and ROOKIE Racing’s endurance racing experience.
It features two high-pressure hydrogen tanks from the Toyota Mirai installed at the rear. Modifications were kept minimal, limited to key parts such as the injectors, fuel delivery pipes, and spark plugs—ensuring the original feel and sound of the engine remain intact while embracing sustainable fuels.
AE86 BEV Concept: Electric Power with a Manual Gearbox
The AE86 BEV Concept, built on the AE86 Levin, utilizes Lexus’ expertise in electrification. Despite being an EV, it maintains the lightweight body and balanced chassis that defined the original AE86.
It combines a motor from the Toyota Tundra HEV and a battery from the Prius PHEV. Uniquely, it also incorporates a manual transmission—rare in EVs—offering drivers the joy of shifting gears even in an electrified setup.
Sustainability Beyond the Powertrain
Both models go beyond mechanical innovation and address environmental responsibility inside the cabin. The seats have been refreshed using reused materials, while the seat belts and pads are made from recycled fabrics—developed in collaboration with aftermarket parts manufacturers.
“Carbon Neutrality Without Leaving Car Lovers Behind”
Toyota designed these two concepts under the philosophy of “Carbon Neutrality for Beloved Cars,” one of three core themes of their Auto Salon display.
Rather than focusing solely on new models, the AE86 H2 and BEV Concepts emphasize the importance of converting existing and classic vehicles to sustainable technologies. These concepts signal Toyota’s belief that the path to a greener future includes honoring automotive heritage.
