In the golden age of pre-war motoring, coachbuilding was the pinnacle of automotive artistry. In the 21st century, this art form has seen a revival thanks to legendary design houses like Pininfarina, Zagato, Italdesign, and Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera. One of the finest examples of this modern renaissance is the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring.

Taking inspiration from the 1952 Alfa Romeo Disco Volante—a lightweight, aerodynamic marvel powered by a 158 bhp 1900 Sprint engine—Touring reimagined the icon using the 8C Competizione as a base. Debuting at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the new Disco Volante received worldwide acclaim for its handcrafted aluminium body, luxurious interior, and bold yet elegant styling. Fewer than ten were ever produced, each uniquely tailored to its owner.

The particular model featured here, dubbed the “C52 Special Edition,” was completed in 2018 using an 8C Competizione donor car. It features classic Rosso paint, vintage 1952 Alfa Romeo emblems, custom carbon accents, and a retro-styled interior with black and red leather, and a brown leather steering wheel reminiscent of vintage wood.

This car has not only been admired but actively driven—amassing just under 11,600 km, including a high-profile appearance at the 2018 Concorso d’Eleganza Kyoto and participation in the Japanese leg of the Gumball 3000 rally.

A true fusion of heritage, design, and performance, the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring is more than a car—it’s rolling art. With its rarity, craftsmanship, and unmistakable style, it stands as one of the most spectacular coachbuilt cars of the modern era.

2018 Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring Superleggera is listed for RM Sotheby’s Private Sales.
