From Glory to Obscurity
The Porsche 911 S/T earned its place in history with a class victory at the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hours. Yet its story took a dramatic turn. Once a celebrated racing machine, it eventually deteriorated into a rusting, twisted shell hidden in a barn near San Francisco. Its last traceable race was in May 1975 at Riverdale, driven by Don Lindley. After passing through several hands, the car vanished from the spotlight.
In 2008, new evidence surfaced that pointed to a potential barn find. In 2013, a Swiss collector traveled to California to rescue the S/T and entrusted its painstaking restoration to Porsche Classic in Stuttgart.
Resurrection in Light Yellow
The project required a complete teardown. The bare chassis was stripped, realigned, and rebuilt using original sheet-metal gauges and technical drawings. More than 1,000 hours of hand craftsmanship went into the body alone, followed by advanced cathodic dip coating for long-term corrosion protection. After two and a half years, the car was delivered in 2016, finished in its original Light Yellow (code 117). With period-correct decals and starting number 41, it stood once again as it had in its victorious 1972 Le Mans appearance.
A Modern Reinterpretation
In 2024, the story continued with a brand-new 911 S/T created through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch programme at the request of the same owner. Its most striking feature: the same Light Yellow paint, meticulously hand-applied to a car that makes extensive use of carbon components.
The modern S/T is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six revving to 9,000 rpm and producing 525 PS, paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Weighing just 1,380 kg, it delivers a purist driving experience. Forged magnesium wheels in Darksilver, black brake calipers, and a black interior complete the look.
Porsche Sonderwunsch: Creativity Without Limits
Together, the two 911 S/Ts showcase the essence of Porsche Sonderwunsch. On one side, a faithful resurrection of a historic racing legend, made possible through archival documentation and master craftsmanship. On the other, a modern reimagining that blends heritage with innovation.
Sonderwunsch creations always meet the same uncompromising quality standards as production cars, backed by a full factory warranty. The result: living proof that Porsche legends are not only preserved, but also reimagined for the future.
