The 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Edition is a remarkable vehicle that combines heritage, exclusivity, and cutting-edge upgrades by McLaren Special Operations (MSO). This particular example, originally delivered to Japan in September 2005, underwent a significant transformation in 2018, elevating it to one of the most sought-after modern supercars.

Rarity and Exclusivity

Among the rarest of the SLR lineage, only 25 units were upgraded to the coveted ‘McLaren Edition’ by MSO. This makes it three times rarer than the iconic Stirling Moss variant. At a cost exceeding 1,380,000 HKD, the upgrades were not just cosmetic but also performance-oriented, making this SLR a true masterpiece. The car has covered just under 28,200 km since new, with only 1,200 km driven after its conversion.

McLaren Edition Enhancements

McLaren Special Operations took lessons from the production of the SLR McLaren and incorporated feedback from owners to create a transformative upgrade package. Key improvements included:

  • Enhanced Handling and Ride: New springs and dampers allowed for a lowered ride height by 10 millimeters, delivering sharper handling and a more engaging driving experience.
  • Aerodynamic Upgrades: Downforce was increased by 15% compared to the SLR 722 Edition, thanks to a new carbon-Kevlar front floor, race-inspired front wheel arch vents, a larger rear diffuser, and an enlarged air brake. Redesigned intakes above the exhausts and on the front bumper mirrored the McLaren logo, adding an artistic touch.
  • Exhaust Refinement: A lighter ceramic-coated exhaust system was installed, enhancing the car’s already impressive soundtrack.

Unique Specifications

This particular SLR McLaren Edition stands out with its striking metallic red paintwork, which appears almost black under certain lighting, adding an air of mystery and aggression. Additional enhancements include 722 S-specification wheels, tinted lights, and a bespoke interior retrimmed in black Alcantara with red stitching and MSO branding. The steering wheel was also upgraded to Alcantara, providing a premium tactile experience.

A Collectible Masterpiece

The upgrades were completed in 2019, and the car was returned to Japan, where it has remained ever since. With its stunning design, limited production, and performance improvements, this McLaren Edition SLR is a true collector’s item. It represents a harmonious blend of Mercedes-Benz luxury and McLaren’s racing pedigree, making it a standout addition to any modern supercar collection.
