Jaguar Type 01: The First Production Car of a New Era

The Type 01 is a luxury all-electric four-door grand tourer developed to establish a new foundation for Jaguar. Rather than adapting an existing combustion-engined model for electric propulsion, the marque has approached the vehicle from a clean sheet, rethinking its proportions, packaging, performance and overall occupant experience.

At the heart of this approach is Jaguar’s new creative philosophy, known as Exuberant Modernism. It brings together expressive design, advanced engineering and carefully considered craftsmanship to create a product intended to be as emotionally compelling as it is technologically sophisticated.

The name itself communicates the model’s position in Jaguar’s evolution. “Type” references the marque’s historic lineage, “0” represents zero tailpipe emissions, and “1” signifies the first of a new generation.

It is a deliberate statement of intent. Jaguar is not simply seeking to electrify its existing identity; it is using electrification as an opportunity to redefine what the brand can be.

A Dramatic Design Inspired by the E-Type and XJS

The Type 01 is defined by proportions that stand apart from the conventional language of electric vehicles. Its low roofline, short front overhang, elongated bonnet and flowing rear section create a silhouette that feels closer to an expressive grand tourer than a typical battery-electric luxury saloon.

The 23-inch wheels reinforce its commanding stance, while the clean body surfaces allow the overall form to take centre stage. The result is a car designed to make an impression even before it moves.

There are clear visual connections to some of Jaguar’s most celebrated models, particularly the E-Type and XJS. The long bonnet and dramatic proportions evoke the marque’s historic grand touring cars, but the Type 01 does not attempt to reproduce their styling. Instead, it reinterprets those familiar themes through a more architectural, contemporary design language.

Jaguar’s designers began with a blank sheet of paper, unconstrained by the requirements of a traditional combustion-engine platform. The design was subsequently refined through extensive aerodynamic development, with engineers and designers working together to preserve the original vision.

The Type 01 features active vanes and a three-stage deployable rear spoiler, alongside detailed airflow optimisation. These elements contribute to a claimed drag coefficient of just 0.23, making it the most aerodynamic Jaguar road car according to the manufacturer.

The exterior colour palette further emphasises the purity of its surfaces, with gloss colours and satin finishes intended to accentuate the car’s sculptural form. A precisely crafted fender-mounted Leaper emblem adds a recognisable Jaguar signature to the otherwise restrained exterior.

Rather than relying on traditional ornamentation, the Type 01 seeks to create visual drama through proportion, surface treatment and the relationship between its individual design elements.

Bespoke JEA Architecture and 1,030PS of Electric Performance

Beneath the Type 01’s distinctive bodywork lies Jaguar Electric Architecture, or JEA, a dedicated platform developed specifically for the brand’s new generation of electric vehicles.

According to Jaguar, the requirements of a four-door GT with more than 1,000PS, distinctive proportions and the marque’s signature driving character could not be fully realised using an existing vehicle architecture. The JEA platform was therefore engineered to accommodate the car’s design ambitions and dynamic objectives from the outset.

The Type 01 employs a tri-motor electric powertrain with intelligent torque vectoring. It produces up to 1,030PS and 1,365Nm of torque, enabling the car to accelerate from 0–100km/h in just 3.2 seconds.

Its performance extends beyond outright acceleration. Jaguar claims that the Type 01 can accelerate from 100 to 180km/h in 4.0 seconds, highlighting the substantial reserves of power available at higher speeds.

Yet Jaguar’s stated ambition goes beyond headline figures. The car has a claimed 50:50 weight distribution, while intelligent torque vectoring is designed to direct power precisely where it is needed. The objective is to deliver a vehicle that feels composed and refined during relaxed touring, yet responds with immediacy when the driver demands more.

Expertise from the Jaguar TCS Racing Formula E team has also contributed to the development of the Type 01’s driving character. The knowledge gained in electric motorsport has helped inform a road car intended to combine high performance with control and sophistication.

Jaguar says the development programme has generated more than 360 patent applications, underscoring the extent of the engineering effort behind its new flagship GT.

The Type 01 is therefore positioned not simply as the fastest-accelerating Jaguar, but as a demonstration of how the brand intends to translate its traditional emphasis on driving pleasure into an all-electric format.

Up to 720km of Range and 850V Charging Technology

For a grand tourer, performance must be matched by the ability to cover long distances comfortably. Jaguar has addressed this requirement with a 118kWh usable battery and an 850V electrical architecture.

The manufacturer anticipates a maximum range of up to 400 miles under the EPA test cycle, or approximately 450 miles under WLTP testing, equivalent to around 720km. These figures are estimates and remain subject to the applicable certification process and final vehicle specifications.

Jaguar also claims a motorway driving range of up to 320 miles, indicating that long-distance capability has been a key consideration in the Type 01’s development.

Charging performance is similarly ambitious. When connected to a compatible 350kW DC rapid charger, the Type 01 is expected to gain up to 200 miles (approximately 321km) of range in as little as 13 minutes.

The combination of a large battery, high-voltage architecture and high-power charging is intended to reduce interruptions during longer journeys. For a vehicle designed around the grand touring concept, this is a crucial part of the overall experience.

Actual range and charging times will depend on factors including driving style, ambient temperature, battery conditions and charging infrastructure. Nevertheless, the announced specifications place the Type 01 firmly within the emerging class of high-performance electric luxury cars designed for both exceptional pace and long-distance travel.

An Interior Defined by Craftsmanship, Digital Clarity and Immersive Sound

Inside the Type 01, Jaguar has adopted a design approach that combines architectural structure with contemporary digital technology.

A central spine runs longitudinally through the cabin, creating distinct spaces for the four occupants. Brass-inspired anodised aluminium finishers run alongside it, emphasising the length of the interior while introducing a warm material contrast to the minimalist surfaces.

The central spine is more than a decorative feature. It establishes a visual rhythm within the cabin and reinforces the sense that the interior has been conceived as a complete architectural environment rather than simply a collection of seats, displays and controls.

The driver is presented with a 24-inch single-glass OLED display, forming the Interactive Driver Display. Integrated into the cockpit, it is intended to provide clear access to driving information and the vehicle’s infotainment functions.

A separate seven-inch touchscreen is positioned between the driver and front passenger. Its smartphone-like interface places frequently used controls within easy reach, complementing the larger display without overwhelming the cabin with screens.

Audio is another central element of the Type 01 experience. Jaguar has developed an Immersive Sound System incorporating a full-width, full-range Panoramic Soundbar across the dashboard. Sensory Audio seats add a tactile dimension to the listening experience, creating a more encompassing sound environment.

The objective is to make every journey feel like an occasion. Materials, digital interfaces and acoustics are integrated into a unified interior concept, reflecting Jaguar’s belief that modern luxury should be defined as much by the experience of travelling as by the vehicle’s performance.

New York World Premiere Signals Jaguar’s Cultural Ambitions

The Type 01 made its world debut in New York on 6 October 2026, with a launch event designed to place the car within the context of contemporary art, fashion, film, music and design.

Large-scale digital displays in Times Square, DUMBO and the Lower East Side showcased Jaguar’s new visual identity. The car then made a dramatic arrival at STORIED in West Chelsea, where guests gathered to celebrate the beginning of the marque’s new chapter.

The event also marked the announcement of British actor Florence Pugh as Jaguar’s inaugural brand ambassador for its new era. Her appointment reflects the brand’s emphasis on originality, creative confidence and cultural relevance.

British singer-songwriter Sienna Spiro performed at the event, while chef Roze Traoré developed an exclusive culinary programme inspired by Jaguar’s creative direction.

Beyond the launch spectacle, the choice of New York was significant. As a global centre for culture and creative expression, the city provided an international stage for Jaguar to communicate a broader brand transformation rather than simply introduce another new model.

Exhibits at STORIED explored the engineering and design process behind the Type 01. These included an aluminium representation of the original line drawn by Jaguar’s designers, the so-called Impossible Panel illustrating the challenge of translating the dramatic body shape into production, and tyre marks representing the extensive testing undertaken to develop the car’s dual character.

Together, these elements presented the Type 01 as both a technological achievement and an expression of Jaguar’s renewed creative ambitions.

For a brand seeking to establish a distinctive position in an increasingly competitive electric luxury market, that cultural dimension may prove as important as the vehicle’s technical specifications.

Can the Type 01 Redefine Jaguar for the Electric Age?

The Type 01 represents a substantial shift in Jaguar’s approach to luxury motoring. Rather than treating electrification as a technical transition alone, the marque has used its new electric architecture as the basis for a broader reinvention of design, performance and brand identity.

Its dramatic proportions recall the spirit of the E-Type and XJS, while the dedicated JEA platform and tri-motor powertrain establish a distinctly contemporary foundation. The combination of 1,030PS, a claimed range of up to 720km under WLTP testing and advanced charging technology aims to demonstrate that an electric grand tourer can deliver both extraordinary performance and long-distance usability.

At the same time, its carefully structured interior, distinctive material choices and immersive audio system reflect a wider definition of luxury—one that encompasses atmosphere, craftsmanship and the quality of time spent in the car.

There is, however, a distinction between an ambitious set of specifications and a successful production car. The Type 01’s ultimate appeal will depend on how convincingly its performance, comfort, range and refinement come together in real-world driving. In a price category above ¥20 million in Japan, technical achievement alone will not be enough; the car must also deliver the desirability and sense of occasion expected of a Jaguar.

With the philosophy of “A Copy of Nothing” at its core, the Type 01 is a statement that Jaguar intends to create its own path rather than follow the conventions of the electric luxury market.

As the brand prepares for the car’s expected arrival in 2027, the question is no longer simply how Jaguar will electrify its future, but what that future will feel like from behind the wheel.
